Contact and the Columbian Exchange

Explain how the Columbian Exchange altered global diets, disease patterns, and economies within a few decades.

For roughly twelve thousand years, two halves of the world had developed separately — different crops, different animals, different germs. Then, over a few decades, they were joined. Historians call the resulting transfer the Columbian Exchange, and it is the most consequential event in this course. It reshaped diets, populations, economies, and politics on four continents, and it did so overwhelmingly to Europe’s advantage and to the Americas’ and Africa’s cost.

Notice the phrasing you will need: not “Columbus discovered America,” but contact created an exchange, and the exchange had causes and effects running in both directions.

Why Europe sailed when it did

Nothing about 1492 was inevitable, so be ready to explain the causes. Portugal spent the fifteenth century pushing down the African coast, taking the Atlantic islands, and learning to grow sugar there with enslaved labor — a working model of the plantation colony, ready to be exported. New tools made the voyages survivable: the caravel, the astrolabe, better charts, and the gunpowder weapons that made small crews formidable.

The motives are usually summarized as God, gold, and glory, and all three were real. Ottoman control of the eastern trade routes raised the value of a western route to Asia. The recent completion of the reconquista in Spain left a crusading warrior class with no war to fight and a monarchy eager to spread Catholicism. And centralizing monarchies now had the money to gamble on a voyage.

So Columbus sailed west in 1492 looking for Asia, and reached the Caribbean instead. Spain and Portugal split the unexplored world between them by the Treaty of Tordesillas in 1494 — a line on a map drawn by two kingdoms and a pope, dividing land neither had seen and no one had asked to be divided. Within forty years, Cortés had overthrown the Aztec empire and Pizarro the Inca, each with a few hundred Spaniards, tens of thousands of Native allies who had their own reasons to fight, and epidemic disease running ahead of them.

When a question asks about the causes of European exploration, group them: technology made it possible, economics and religion made it desirable, and strong monarchies made it affordable. Grouped causes read as analysis; a list reads as memorization.

The exchange, both directions

Ships crossed the Atlantic in both directions with full holds. What moved is examinable in specifics, so learn the specifics.

The exchange was two-way in goods and utterly one-sided in consequences.

The demographic catastrophe

The deadliest thing to cross the Atlantic was invisible. Native populations had no acquired immunity to Eurasian and African diseases, and epidemics moved faster than the colonists themselves — often arriving before any European did. Across the Americas, the population fell by something like ninety percent in the first century and a half after contact.

Be careful how you explain this, because the careless version costs you the complexity point. Disease was the primary killer, but it did not act alone: forced labor, warfare, starvation after fields and stores were seized, and the breakup of families and communities all made epidemics far more lethal than they would otherwise have been. A society that is being conscripted and displaced cannot nurse its sick or plant its next crop.

That is also why the labor system had to change — which is the subject of the next lesson.

Silver, and the first global economy

In 1545 the Spanish found a mountain of silver at Potosí, in what is now Bolivia, and later great deposits in Mexico. Native workers were conscripted through a rotating labor draft, the mita, and mortality in the mines was appalling. The silver funded Spain’s European wars, poured so much money into Europe that it drove decades of inflation, and then flowed onward to China, which wanted silver above all else.

That last link is worth holding onto: a mine in the Andes changed prices in Madrid and tea purchases in Guangzhou. This is the beginning of a genuinely global economy, and it is a favorite subject for causation questions.

Worked example 1 — Causation

Explain how the discovery of silver at Potosí affected economies outside the Americas.

Causation questions want a chain, and each link should be a separate clause you could defend on its own. The figure above is that chain; here it is in prose.

Enormous silver output, extracted by conscripted Native labor under the mita. The silver crossed the Atlantic as Spanish crown revenue and paid for European wars and imperial administration. So much new money chasing the same goods drove sustained inflation across Europe, which hurt wage earners and landlords on fixed rents. And much of that silver did not stay in Europe at all — it moved on to China, which taxed and traded in silver, tying the Andes to Asia.

One sentence, exam-ready: Potosí silver financed Spanish power, inflated European prices, and drew the Americas into a trade network reaching China — making the mine a cause of economic change on three continents.

Notice what makes this analysis rather than narration: every step names a mechanism. “Silver made Spain rich” is narration. “New money chasing the same goods drove prices up” is a mechanism.

Worked example 2 — Data Interpretation

Using the population graph in this lesson, describe the trend and explain what a careful historian would not conclude from it.

Describe first, in numbers: central Mexico’s population fell steeply through the sixteenth century, with the sharpest drop in the first three decades after contact, and by 1620 stood at a small fraction of its 1519 level. Roughly a twenty-fold decline.

Now the limits. The graph shows how many, not why — disease, forced labor, warfare, and famine are all consistent with this curve, and the graph alone cannot apportion blame among them. It also rests on estimates that historians dispute, since no one was counting; different reconstructions produce different starting figures.

Saying that out loud is not hedging. It is exactly the move that earns the complexity point: use the data, then name what the data cannot settle.

Worked example 3 — Causation — ranking causes

Explain why the Spanish conquests of the Aztec and Inca empires succeeded, and rank the causes.

Four causes, and the exam rewards you for weighing them rather than listing them.

Disease came first and mattered most: smallpox struck Tenochtitlán during the siege and killed enormous numbers including the ruler Cuitláhuac, and epidemics preceded the Spanish into the Andes. An empire losing a third of its people cannot mount a coordinated defense.

Native alliances came second and are the most often forgotten: both empires ruled subject peoples with real grievances, and tens of thousands of them fought alongside the Spanish for their own reasons.

Political decapitation came third: both states were highly centralized, so seizing or killing the ruler — Moctezuma, Atahualpa — paralyzed command in a way it would not have in a decentralized society.

Weapons came fourth. Steel, firearms, and horses were decisive in particular engagements and are the most visible cause, which is exactly why students overrate them.

The ranking is the answer: Conquest succeeded less because of Spanish arms than because epidemic disease and internal division had already broken the empires the Spanish claimed to defeat.

Worked example 4 — Continuity and Change

For Native peoples of the Great Plains, what changed and what continued after contact?

Continuity-and-change questions want both halves, and most answers deliver only the first. Force yourself to write two sentences of continuity.

What changed: the horse. Brought by the Spanish and spread north by trade and raiding, it transformed bison hunting, mobility, and warfare, and let peoples such as the Comanche and Lakota become dominant regional powers. European trade goods — metal tools, firearms — changed material life. Epidemic disease repeatedly cut populations.

What continued: bison remained the center of the economy, and the seasonal round of following the herds persisted. Kinship, band organization, and religious practice adapted without being replaced. Groups continued to trade with and fight one another on their own terms, for their own reasons, well into the nineteenth century.

Then the balance sentence, which is where the reasoning point sits: The horse intensified an existing way of life rather than replacing it — Plains societies became more mobile and more powerful at doing what they had already been doing.

Worked example 5 — Argumentation

Write a thesis for: “Evaluate the extent to which the Columbian Exchange benefited Europe at the expense of the Americas.”

“Evaluate the extent” means weigh it, so a thesis that says “there were benefits and costs on both sides” earns nothing. Take a measurable position.

Weak: The Columbian Exchange had both positive and negative effects on Europe and the Americas. Unarguable, so undefendable.

Strong: Although the Exchange transferred goods in both directions, its consequences were profoundly asymmetric: American crops and Andean silver fed European population growth and financed European states, while the same decades brought demographic collapse and coerced labor to the Americas — an asymmetry produced not by the transfer itself but by who controlled it.

Look at what that sentence does. Although concedes the two-way transfer, which is a real counter-position. The main clause takes a measurable stand (“profoundly asymmetric”). And the final clause previews a causal argument about control — a line of reasoning, and a route to the complexity point.

Common trap: “The Columbian Exchange” is not a crop list

Students lose points by treating the Exchange as a vocabulary item — corn went east, horses went west, done. The exam wants consequences: European population growth from American calories, Plains societies remade by the horse, the Caribbean turned into sugar plantations worked by enslaved Africans, Spain enriched and then inflated by silver.

Second trap: do not write that Europeans deliberately spread smallpox in this period. Later episodes of intentional infection exist, but the sixteenth-century catastrophe was not a plan — and saying it was replaces a defensible argument with one you cannot support. “Unintended, and then ruthlessly exploited” is both truer and more sophisticated.

Common trap: A few hundred Spaniards did not defeat two empires

The “a handful of men conquered the Inca” version of this story is a distractor, and it is wrong in a specific way: it erases the tens of thousands of Native allies who fought alongside the Spanish because they had their own grievances against Aztec or Inca rule, and it erases the epidemics that arrived first.

Say it as the exam wants it said: conquest succeeded through alliance, disease, political decapitation, and only then weapons. Ranking those four correctly is worth more than listing all of them.

Hack: Group your causes: possible, desirable, affordable

Any “why did Europeans explore” question can be answered in three groups, and grouping is what makes it read as analysis: technology made it possible (caravel, astrolabe, charts, guns), economics and religion made it desirable (Ottoman control of eastern routes, sugar profits, the crusading impulse after the reconquista), and centralized monarchies made it affordable.

The same three-bucket trick works on almost any causation prompt in this course. Ask: what made it possible, what made it desirable, what made it affordable — then say which bucket mattered most. That last clause is the analysis.
