The Math section at a glance

The Digital SAT Math section has two modules of 35 minutes, each with 22 questions (a few unscored). That is roughly 95 seconds per question. Like R&W, it is adaptive: Module 1 is mixed difficulty and determines whether Module 2 is the easy or hard variant.

Calculator allowed the whole time

A built-in Desmos graphing calculator is available on every question, and you may bring an approved handheld too. This changes strategy: messy arithmetic and graphing become easy, so the test rewards setting up the problem correctly more than hand computation.

The four domains

  1. 1.Algebra — linear equations, inequalities, and systems.
  2. 2.Advanced Math — quadratics, exponentials, polynomials, and nonlinear functions.
  3. 3.Problem-Solving & Data Analysis — ratios, percentages, probability, statistics, and reading data.
  4. 4.Geometry & Trigonometry — area/volume, angles, triangles, circles, and right-triangle trig.

Two answer formats

  • Multiple choice with four options (A-D).
  • Student-Produced Response (SPR), also called grid-in or fill-in: you type the number yourself, with no options. Fractions and decimals are allowed; you do not reduce fractions. If an answer is a range, any value in the range counts. Negative answers and answers up to a limited number of characters are accepted.

Worked example (SPR)

If 3x + 5 = 26, what is the value of x? 3x = 21, so x = 7. You would type 7 directly.

Key takeaways

  • Use Desmos to graph, solve, and check — especially for systems and quadratics.
  • For SPR, you do not bubble; just type a valid form of the number.
  • Translate words into an equation first; let the calculator handle the rest.
  • Nail Module 1 to unlock the higher-scoring Module 2.
